Tennis elbow can be a real pain in the elbow. One can be close to certain that he or she has tennis elbow if there is a pain on the outside of the elbow that radiates down the arm in addition to a weakened grip. Ironically, only a minor amount of injuries-less than 5%-are caused by actually playing tennis.
Tennis elbow is caused by any activity that repeatedly uses the elbow.
Ligaments may become inflamed because of the overuse, which often results in discomfort or tiny tears. Pain can last from six to 12 weeks from the initial injury, and can remain for three more weeks or even a few years.
Pain resulting from tennis elbow can be lessened in several ways. One way is to apply ice packs to covered skin for no longer than 15 minutes at a time. Other methods involve taking pain medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen as necessary. Also, it's always wise to rest the joint as much as possible. In rare cases of extreme distress, steroid or cortisone injections can be administered to relieve the pain of tennis elbow.
Tennis elbow can be prevented through physical therapy, stretches, and strength training. Strength training builds the specific muscles, therefore relieving the stress on the tendons and ligaments that causes injury. The arms should be sufficiently stretched and warmed up before doing physical activity.
It's very important that the elbow receive the proper time to re-heal before being reused. Otherwise, the elbow is at risk for re-injury. Left untreated, the joint can be seriously damaged. In some rare cases surgery is necessary, although it occurs in less than 3% of patients.
If t tennis elbow resulted from actually playing tennis, there are prevention methods that can be taken to avoid further injury. Methods include downsizing to a smaller racquet and/or adjusting the grip size. Both of these methods aid control and lessen stress on the elbow. Also, strings on the racquet can be loosened, which reduces vibrations sent from the racquet through the arm. Using a graphite racquet with nylon strings also minimizes vibration. A tennis professional can asses the quality of the racquet and the player's tennis techniques, ensuring proper equipment usage and proper methods.
Tennis elbow is neither a fun injury nor an uncommon one. When left untreated, it can be debilitating. If someone thinks that they may be developing tennis elbow, the best thing to do is to stop the activity and rest.. It is much better to take a few weeks off to rest and rehabilitate than to aggravate an injury to the point of surgery.
