People love shoes. Men loyally wear out their favorites, women adore and collect them, and kids love to torture them. Athletic shoes are no exception and the high tech shoes of today provide excellent support and space age cushioning. Athletic shoes are so popular that they even have special names like takkies in South Africa, sneakers in America and sandshoes in Australia.
Another common nickname used in America is tennies, short for tennis shoes. Athletic shoes today are specially designed for each type of athletic pursuit and tennis shoes are built for the rigors of the court.
Athletic shoes were first manufactured in 1800 and were called plimsolls. Manufacturing of athletic shoes was made possible through development of a process called vulcanization, which involves heating rubber and fabric to meld them together. Tennis shoes today are made of light material that can survive scuffing on the toe and support lateral movement and provide excellent cushioning. They are also designed to block transfer heat from the hot cement of the court to the foot of the player.
Nike is probably the most visible manufacturer of tennis shoes. Nike tennis shoes and athletic gear are worn and promoted by many of the highest profile tennis players on the pro circuit including Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Nike offers tennis shoes for men and women, but not for kids. Men and women's Nike tennis shoes cost $50 a pair for City Court III's and up to $120 a pair for Air Zoom Revives. Nike also provides a full line of athletic apparel and gear to help complement the stylish tennis shoes.
New Balance tennis shoes are made by a company that does not spend money on high dollar spokespersons. New Balance is a Boston based company that still manufactures most of its tennis shoes right here in America. While the company began as an arch support manufacturer, New Balance has produced high quality shoes since 1961. New Balance tennis shoes for men and women cost from about $48 for the New Balance 546 to $120 for the New Balance 1200. New Balance makes many shoes for kids, but not a shoe specifically for tennis. New Balance also offers a variety of apparel and accessories for the tennis player.
PUMA is a German company that manufactures tennis shoes. PUMA's founder is the brother of the founder of Addidas. The brothers operated a shoe company jointly until an unhappy split developed. PUMA was founded when the brothers split their original business after WWII in 1948. PUMA tennis shoes are made only for women and are called Le Set. A pair of Puma tennis shoes cost $65 and sport green or yellow stripes. PUMA also sells a variety of sportswear and accessories for men and women tennis players.
Tennis is a sport that young and old can enjoy throughout their lives. It is healthy and fun and hitting a laser-like passing shot feels just as good at sixty as it does at sixteen. Wearing the right tennis shoes ensures that one's feet feel as good as 40-love. The major shoe manufacturers produce many varieties of tennis shoes to choose from ensuring that every player can find shoes which allow them to play in comfort and with confidence.
